When you drive the 2-lane, curvy, mountainous, road up to Haleakala Summit, you’ll pass through six climatic zones. Temperatures at your sea level accommodations may be balmy and warm, but when you arrive at the national park, plan to be surprised by 40º to 60º, often windy, thin-air atmosphere. You’ll find stark, volcanic scenery here. Plants are dwarfed by the altitude. Your ability to breathe the thin air is also compromised, so walk slowly and allow time to rest.
The curvy road to Hana takes you to the coastal, Kipahulu area of the park. This is a tropical experience of waterfalls and lush (often fragrant, flowering) plants. There are many scenic stops to make along the way. The entrance is 10 miles past Hana. This is, easily, an all-day excursion if you plan to enjoy the picturesque scenery along the way and spend time in the quaint town of Hana.
For both drives:
- bring food
- bring water
- gas up before you leave
- bring cash to pay for park entrance fees
Expect to:
- be wowed by beautiful scenery
- take your time to enjoy the day
- return with wonderful memories and snapshots
